Here we are, back at it again with the newest instalment of the Modern Warfare series. Do you know what that means? It means I’m going to spend hours complaining that we win games by playing the objective and that there’s always 1 guy on the roof of that building on Farm 18. Always.

The multiplayer is pretty standard fare if I’m honest. It isn’t bad by any means – it’s just pretty normal stuff at this point. They’ve added a couple of new game modes, not that it matters because everyone in each lobby thinks it’s all Team Deathmatch regardless, and there’s a new gun levelling system which is both kind of cool, but also a pinch limiting when you start off.
The maps for the multiplayer are also fine. I’m not sure there’s a map I’d go “Oh, this one is awesome!”. I have my favourite maps, Mercado Las Almas and Al Bagra Fortress, but it’s more for aesthetics than anything to do with how you play on them. The maps all kind of feel the same to me. They all seem roughly the same size, there’s nothing that encourages different play styles. Honestly, they’re all pretty vanilla. Maybe it’s because the game’s only been out a week? There’s time to add more content, which I hope they do.

If you’re getting the game just for the multiplayer, I’d wait a little while first. At the moment, it’s nothing spectacular. It has a few things to set it apart from previous releases, but I’m not sure they bring enough to the table just yet for me. It has cross-play, which is good but something I almost expect from a game that gets most of its playtime out of the multiplayer (as well as being a major release from an industry giant).
Like, it’s fun! I play it, and I stream it. But I do find myself talking about how good the maps from Modern Warfare and Black Ops: Cold War were.
I didn’t buy it for multiplayer, so I’m not disappointed by it too much. No, I actually bought Call of Duty for the campaign. I’m that person.
If you’re looking to buy Modern Warfare II solely for the multiplayer? Maybe hang fire.
